A regular meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on March 10, 2015, at Frank and Camille's Keyboard Center, 229 B Glen Cove Road, Carle Place, N.Y. Eight members were in attendance. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. President Michael Slavin informed the chapter that our 2014 federal tax returns had been filed.
The technical was given by Kent Webb, Manager of Technical Service and Support for Steinway & Sons. Kent discussed numerous product changes at Steinway, including a redesigned music desk, polyester case and natural underside finishes, upright pressure bar modifications, Escaine usage instead of buckskin on knuckles, among many other updates. He continued with tuning suggestions for Steinway uprights, and gave a short history of hammer making at Steinway and the new hammers used on the Models B and D, the recommended lacquer proportions and ratios for voicing, as well as the various differences in shanks and flanges. Kent informed us of Steinway's growing presence in China, as well as the re-integration of rebuilding into regular piano production at the factory, and Steinway's policy on the installation of Dampp-Chaser systems into their pianos. Steinway's new private ownership by billionaire financier John Paulson was discussed, and the closing of Steinway Hall and relocation to a new facility on Avenue of the Americas. The informative presentation was followed by a question and answer session, and the members all enjoyed Kent's expansive knowledge on the iconic American piano.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
