This month's technical class will be given by two hammer experts and associates of Melanie Brook of Brooks, Ltd., Amy Tiernan, RPT and Katie Coleman, Office Manager.
Take a microscopic tour into the depths of a piano hammer. Learn about the making of felt and the process of manufacturing hammers and what’s different about Natural Felt. We will discuss how to control weight and touch through hammer selection and the information needed for boring hammers.
Amy Banovich-Tiernan
Amy is our Resident RPT (registered piano technician) and a graduate of North Bennet Street School’s, Piano Technology program. Joining our Brooks LTD family in December 2003 she works primarily in our production department. Her formal training and qualifications are invaluable from a technical standpoint and provide us with clear insight in troubleshooting.
Only with us part-time now, Amy together with her husband Jim own Doghouse Pianos, a full service restoration/tuning business. In addition, Amy is an active member of the PTG having held a variety of leadership positions, and currently assists in administering examinations. When she’s not restoring pianos or actively attending PTG meetings Amy can be found in the company of her furry companion, Ollie, training for a marathon or honing her skills as a black belt in Muay Thai kickboxing. It’s all that personal strength and positive energy that makes us so blessed to have her as a member of our team!
Katie D. Coleman
Katie is the newest member of our Brooks LTD team joining us in 2014. Our Girl Friday has jumped feet first into our small world of piano technology and is cross training in all aspects of Brooks LTD. Focusing primarily on marketing and social media, Katie is in charge of maintaining our website and online presence and develops our email marketing. Her interest in the technical side of our business has quickly developed her ability to advise our clients on products and services giving quotes with confidence. She’s even joined the PTG as an Associate Member. Katie has passed all of the Dampp-Chaser on line learning modules and her hands on interests are increasingly showing themselves as she learns her way around the production shop.
Not surprisingly, Katie’s background is in music. With degrees in vocal performance and cultural studies, music has been at the center of her life for decades. Katie plays the harp and even tunes her own! Music has always been her first love and she is thrilled to be working in an industry with other people who are as passionate about it as she is. Outside of work she keeps busy with a variety of hobbies including blacksmithing, photography, writing, drawing, and singing.
The Executive Committee will meet prior to the general meeting at 5 p.m. at the Carle Place Diner, on the northeast corner of Old Country Road and Glen Cove Road.
