Michael Slavin points out this interesting article in the Times: Why Do Pianists Know So Little About Pianos?
Annual reminder: It is now winter, and you should try to remember to remove your glues from your car overnight during the cold season. Constant freeze-thaw cycles can reduce the bonding properties and effectiveness of most adhesives (especially carpenter's wood glues such as Tite-Bond, PVC-E, Roo Glue, etc.). And there is also the added inconvenience of trying to make a repair with a glue that is frozen solid or so thick that it will not flow. If you read Pianotek's recent online newsletter, they indicated that they will not sell or ship any glues during the winter for this very reason.
Mike Slavin called meeting to order at 7 p.m. Six members were present.
Arlan Harris gave the technical, which was a discussion on various topics. Arlan is a very experienced tech and has worked for Steinway for many years. The first discussion was about a handicapped musician and how to help with pedaling. Voicing was next discussed. Arlan suggested having different size needles available. Keith brought up strengthening bass hammers with different solutions. Arlan showed us a book by Virgil Smith about aural tuning. Paul Keogler brought up the accuracy of tuning forks. Arlan continued with stories of his experiences and finished with a slide show.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30.
