A regular meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on November 12, 2013, at Frank and Camille's Keyboard Center, 229B Glen Cove Road, Carle Place, N.Y. Five chapter members and two guests attended.
President Slavin called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.
The October meeting was a tour of the Steinway & Sons factory in Astoria, so there were no minutes to be read.
There was no Treasurer's report, since Paul Keogler could not attend the meeting.
President Slavin announced the holiday party at the New Hyde Park Inn on December 3, 2013, and the meeting then proceeded directly to the voicing technical by Lee Dobrins. This was the second part of his clinic (originally begun at the September meeting). Lee showed the new Renner Blue hammers, with their distinctive shoulder profile He emphasized not to file old hammers completely. One trick he mentioned was to use carbon paper to line up the hammers. The members commented that carbon paper is not as readily available as it was many years ago. Lee emphasized the different techniques necessary for working on new hammers, as opposed to old ones. There was a long discussion on lacquer combinations and Lee pointed to his easel charts for the percentages of different lacquer combinations. This discussion was followed by the techniques required to deal specifically with Steinway hammers. Lee commented that Steinway hammers are especially hard to voice.
The members greatly enjoyed the technical, and commented that it was very informative. Many questions were asked and answered throughout the session. The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m., with a reminder from the President to the members about the holiday party next month.
