A regular meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on November 13, 2012, at Frank and Camille's Keyboard Center, 229B Glen Cove Road, Carle Place, N.Y. Seven chapter members and two guests attended.
President Slavin called the meeting to order at 7:14 PM.
Minutes for the October 9, 2012 meeting were accepted.
The treasurer’s report was accepted as read.
President Slavin announced that the winter holiday dinner will be held on Tuesday, December 4, at Jonathan's Restaurant, 3000 Jericho Turnpike, Garden City Park, N.Y. The reservation time is 7:00 P.M. Contact Michael Slavin to let him know if you will be attending.
The business meeting concluded at 7:16 P.M. Arlan Harris, RPT was the guest speaker for the evening. Mr. Harris shared with us his insights and suggestions to increase sales. Various piano service techniques were also discussed and demonstrated. Tips included the following:
- When a potential customer calls, you have a 20-30 second window to get the caller’s attention. Be creative with your sales pitch.
- Ask for recommendations.
- Offer a day of service work on a piano for a flat rate. Perform a partial action regulation.
- A fast way of fitting hammers to strings on an upright piano was discussed and demonstrated.
- Use a digital hygrometer and give the customer a Dampp-Chaser® brochure to inform the customer of the need for humidity control.
- Use a sample model of Scott Jones’ touch weight rail to demonstrate how touch-weight can be reduced.
- A way to remove key-leads from keys without disassembling the action was demonstrated.
- A technique for re-gluing loose ivories was demonstrated.
- A quick and easy way to regulate the damper up-stop rail was discussed.
- Various approaches to voicing piano hammers were demonstrated.
The meeting adjourned at 8:40 P.M.
