Tech Tip
by Michael Slavin, Chapter President
Here is a trick that many of us already use, but for those who do not, you may find it very helpful. Sometime we encounter a grand piano in which the tri-chord damper felts in the tenor section do not lift adequately up from the strings. This can be caused by late timing of the damper levers (regulated too high above the key tail felts), or by damper felts which have been replaced with tri-chords that are too long. Setting a temperament with this situation can be nearly impossible, as the strings are continually muted. A simple remedy for this problem is to keep two clothes-pins in your toolcase. Manually lift the two damper heads of the interval that you are tuning, and clamp with the clothes-pins. The clothes-pins wll keep the dampers well above strings and prevent them from dropping, thereby giving you the needed sustain to properly tune the strings.
