Tech Tip
by Michael Slavin, RPT
Although tuning a Yamaha Disklavier vertical piano is no different than tuning any other "acoustic" upright, there is one very important fact that every non-Disklavier technician should know: the power should be turned off at the mains before performing any service. Although the power switch on the control panel may be "off," there is still constant power nevertheless to the system and circuit boards. If a wire-handle mute, a screw, or any other metallic / conductive object should fall into the piano during service, the possibility of a short is very likely. The power can be turned off on the small foot control panel under the treble keybed or on the power supply which is mounted to the bottom board behind the knee panel. Of course, it is easy to just unplug the power cord from the outlet if it is accessible. Also be sure to remount and tighten all case panel locking clips and screws when service is complete, to maintain the protection required by UL certification.
