Tech Tip
by Michael Slavin, Chapter President
Sometimes upon removal of a vertical action, reinstallation can be very difficult because the action bolts are a bit too low, and the forks in the action brackets are too tight to position on the bolts. One corrective measure for this problem is to lower the nose bolts in the keybed. This will usually change the strike point, though, which creates a whole new problem and is not advisable unless poor treble tone is also an issue I carry a thirty-inch length of steel pipe in my car which when placed over the action bolts can apply more than enough leverage to slightly bend them upward. However, if you find yourself in this situation and do not have a pipe, remove the shaft from your extension tuning hammer and slide the hollow handle over the action bolts. While the leverage is not nearly as great as that of a pipe, with a little effort it will usually be sufficient to achieve the slight upward bend you require.
