Often when adjustments need to be made to the lost motion of pedal rods
on older vertical pianos, it can be difficult to turn the nuts and compressed
felt punchings on the trap-lever prop-bolts. In such cases it is easier to
clamp a pair of vise-grips to the top of the prop-bolt itself, and turn the
bolt in the opposite direction that you would wish to turn the nut
(counter-clockwise to reduce the lost motion, clockwise to increase it).
It might sometimes be necessary to also hold the nut with a pair of pliers so
that it does not spin with the bolt
