Mike Slavin called the Zoom meeting to order at 7 p.m. Nine members were present.
The technical was presented by Boaz Kirschenbaum on practical voicing. Boaz graduated from the Steinway academy in Hamburg, Germany. He specializes in action work and voicing. He is located in Boston.
Boaz says "voicing is the only piano art that is subjective". 80% is listening. Most voicing should be done while tuning, listening and then voicing.
Boaz started his discussion on his theories of voicing, related to tuning, stability, string level and listening.
Next, he showed us the many tools he uses for voicing. A chopstick voicer is a must. (Voice through the strings). He then demonstrated different voicing techniques on assorted hammers. Some Steinway hammers are difficult to voice and much practice is needed. Hardeners can be used to brighten hammers but be careful with its use.
Boaz' presentation was very detailed and informative. He gave us a lot of important info on hammer voicing.
The meeting concluded with a question and answer session.
The meeting adjourned at 8:25.
