Proposed Minutes of the May 14, 2019 Meeting

The May 14, 2019 meeting of the L.I.-Nassau Chapter PTG was held at Frank and Camille's.

Mike Slavin called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm. Five members were in attendance. The Treasurer's report was given by Paul Keogler, who has received the annual members' dues from the Home Office. The dinner committee chair Michael Slavin announced the year end Dinner Party, to be held on Tuesday June 11 at Escorza's Mexican Restaurant in Levittown.

The technical was given by Paul Keogler, who presented a comprehensive class on glues and adhesives. He began with a discussion of wood glues, specifically yellow PVA thermoplastics, their proper storage and application, followed by hide glues, including crystals and ready-to-use cold hide glue. He next went on to mention PVC-E glue, its discontinuation, and preferable substitutes and uses. Paul then talked about issues of freshness, versatility, water intrusion into joints, as well as the importance of the joints themselves, their fit and clamping, leading into addressing the solubility agents for various glues This was followed by adhesives for leather, felt, and keytops. Epoxies were the next topic of discussion, the various viscosities and available types, gap filling properties, putty expoy sticks, and gap/hole fillers, and coloring agents. CA glues were next on the agenda, their proper use and toxicity, and shelf life and storage. He then continued to discuss in depth the use of shellac as a sealant as well as an adhesive, and its various preparations and thickness. He stressed the proper method of preparation of previously glued surfaces that will be re-glued, and concluded with a discussion of the meaning and differences of drying and curing.
