Proposed Minutes of the May Meeting
by Allan Schumacker - Secretary
A meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on May 4, 2010, at Frank and Camille’s Keyboard
Center located on Route 110 in Melville, NY.
In lieu of a regular meeting, the chapter decided to attend this meeting that Camille scheduled. The presentation
was given by Don Mannino, director of technical education for Kawai America Corporation. All technicians on
Frank & Camille’s mailing list were invited to attend. Dinner was provided prior to the commencement of the lecture.
The entire event was scheduled to run from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A chapter business meeting was not held.
Following dinner, Camille addressed the group and thanked everyone for coming. She introduced Don Mannino who was
recently awarded by Kawai the title Master Piano Artisan.
Before beginning the presentation, Don briefly talked about his background in piano technology and the exam he took
to meet the MPA requirements. The topic for the evening’s lecture was titled: The Evolution of the Kawai RX Grand
Pianos. The lecture, accompanied by a slide presentation, traced the history of Kawai and the events, pianos, and
technological developments that led to the RX series piano.
Kawai’s newest line of pianos is the RX “Blak” series. First introduced in 2009, in addition to the other features
of the RX piano, the “Blak” piano features:
- Brass lid prop cups
- Brass short lid prop
- Black felt
- Black underfelt on the hammers
- Black action brackets
- Resin reinforced hammershanks
- A better finish on the inside of the rim
- Greater attention is paid to regulation and voicing before the piano leaves the factory.
The discussion also covered regulation procedures and specifications for Kawai RX pianos.
A brochure containing a printout of the slide presentation and regulation specifications was distributed.
The meeting ended at approximately 9:00 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Allan N. Schumacker, RPT
