The meeting was called to order at Frank and Camille's on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:00 PM. Arlan Harris of the NYC chapter hosted this month's technical entitled "When Good Isn't Good Enough". Arlan began with a discussion on the loss of good piano sound. Today everything is electronic. Yamaha even advertises "hybrid pianos". There is a lack of sensitivity of tone. We should stress the importance of acoustic piano playing - not electronic.
The discussion moved on to what pianists want. A stable tuning is most important. Arlan demonstrated using a wooden dowel to rub on strings to stabilize the tuning. Another trick is to tap the strings by the bridge pins. Voicing hammers was next discussed. Arlan showed us some tricks using special needles to voice the hammers. "Learn many different methods to voicing," he suggested. Arlan told some stories about his experiences in the field with customers. The stories were insightful and informative - you had to be there. The meeting ended with a question and answer period. TPR Tools was recommended as a good site for special tools.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20
