A regular meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on April 9, 2013, at Frank and Camille's East, 482 Walt Whitman Road, Melville, N.Y. Seven chapter members and two guests attended.
President Slavin called the meeting to order at 7:08 PM.
Minutes for the March 12, 2013, meeting were accepted as published in the newsletter.
The treasurer’s report was accepted as read.
President Slavin announced that the PTG Mid-Atlantic Regional Convention would be held April 18-21 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Chapter elections were held. Current officers were re-elected to their respective positions.
The guest speaker for the evening was Ed Dryburgh, RPT. Mr. Dryburgh’s presentation for the evening was on the use of CA adhesives with respect to piano repairs. He began his lecture by introducing himself and telling how he got into the business of selling adhesives. He continued his discussion with a short history of cyano-acrylate glue, pointing out that it has been around for about seventy years, and was used by medics during the Viet Nam war for wound-closure. The remainder of the lecture focused on the different viscosities of the glue, proper application, shelf life, proper use of the catalyst, and demonstrations of ways in which the glue can be used for piano repair.
Piano repairs discussed included:- Broken hammer-shank repair
- Loose bridge-pin repair
- Reattaching hammer felt to the wood molding
- Reattaching loose soundboard ribs
- Fixing slipping tuning pins: Use of a respirator is advised when treating an entire pinblock.
- Polyester finish repair
- Jack flange glue-joint repair on old upright pianos
- Fixing broken piano keys
- Gluing grand knuckles to hammer-shanks
- Re-gluing loose ivory key coverings
- Securing loose key leads
The meeting adjourned at 8:26 P.M.
