A regular meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on March 12, 2013, at Frank and Camille's Keyboard Center, 229B Glen Cove Road, Carle Place, N.Y. Seven chapter members and two guests attended.
President Slavin called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.
Minutes for the February 12, 2013 meeting were accepted as published in the March newsletter.
The treasurer’s report was accepted as read.
The guest speaker for the evening was Zeno Wood, president of the New York City Chapter, PTG. Mr. Wood started his presentation by distributing two handouts. The first one contained Mr. Wood’s own thoughts on concert-piano preparation and those of Norman Neblett, Steve Brady, Frank Hanson, and Kathy Smith. All the information in this handout was written to try and help the technician understand concert piano preparation from the viewpoint of the concert pianist.
The second handout was titled: “Custom Fit Regulation”. This was written by Mr. Wood and was the primary focus of the evening’s presentation. He talked about the need for piano technicians who are non-pianists to think more like pianists and to understand what action regulation was about. The discussion continued with the necessary steps that are needed prior to beginning the actual regulation process. Emphasis was placed on the final regulation being done with the action in the piano. The various stages of action regulation were described in depth and demonstrated at a piano. In the end, a finely regulated piano enables a pianist to “‘playoff the jacks’”. Reference was made to this in the August 2009 issue of the Piano Technicians Journal in an article written by Fred Redekop.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Allan N. Schumacker, RPT
