A regular meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on February 10, 2015, at Frank and Camille's Keyboard Center, 229 B Glen Cove Road, Carle Place, N.Y. Seven members were in attendance. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.
The guest speaker for the evening was Michael Slavin, RPT, President of the Long Island-Nassau Chapter, who spoke at the last minute when the scheduled speaker Patrick Draine, NERVP could not attend due to extreme snowfall in Boston and urgent family matters. Michael presented a wide range of innovative technical tips, tools, and techniques to make everyday field work easier and quicker. He showed many ways in which magnets can be utilized, as well as surgical tools and office/stationery parts. Many storage suggestions were made for carrying chemicals, electrical cords, punchings, and glues and adhesives. An easy way to achieve accurate and consistent vertical let-off was presented, as well as a way to maintain absolute strike point accuracy when installing new hammers, and factory perfect damper felt replacement in vertical pianos. Creative ways of using tuning mutes and lid props were shown, along with string height measurement and new string installation, key leveling, broken agraffe removal, key-lead swedging, bent action nose-bolts, and fallboard decal application. Michael showed a unique repair specific to Acrosonic actions, and a quick method to free a rubbing jack in a wippen window, and stop a buzzing rib/soundboard. Many other tips were provided, and the attending members made suggestions of their own. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
