This month's technical class will be given by our newest member, Frank Davis (formerly of the Long Island -Suffolk Chapter PTG). It has previously been presented at the national and regional conferences.

Frank Davis began his involvement with piano technology in 1996. That is when he joined the Piano Technician’s Guild, after apprenticing with Barbara Snook and Joe Sciortino.

Franks's interest in moving began after he started to buy and sell pianos. He relied on local piano movers, but they proved to be so unpredictable and unreliable that he decided to try it on his own. Thus began a period of trial and error that led him to develop methods and techniques which made a formerly burdensome task rewarding and enjoyable. Now Frank’s business has evolved into three categories: tuning and repairs, buying and selling, and transport.

His class will explain various shop techniques and practical equipment that are geared to a piano tuner’s needs. Methods of lifting and specialized tools will also be reviewed. Class members are encouraged to describe difficult moving situations that they have encountered, so we can discuss possible solutions. The final section of the class will cover dangers, pitfalls, and a checklist that can be used prior to any piano move.
