Ronsen
Minutes of the January Meeting
by Marty Dinerstein - Secretary

The January meeting of the Nassau PTG was held on January 10 at the Frank and Camille Piano Center in Carle Place. The meeting was called to order by our president Paul Eccardt at 7 p.m. Eight members and one guest attended.

We started the meeting with the technical by Wally and Melanie Brooks, since they had to travel a long distance. The technical dealt with touch weight. Touch weight is the amount of force required to press down the key and the amount of force for the key to return. Wally explained that the hammers can play a major role in the amount of force that one needs to press the key down. There are different weights of hammers and even a set from the same model piano can have different weights. In order to correct a problem with touch weigh for a client, Wally said that we should weigh the hammer on a gram scale and he can then make up a set that are lighter or heavier depending on our needs. Other than the weight of the hammer, friction can also affect the amount of force we need to press down the key. Wally gave a very interesting and informative technical, and we thank him and Melanie for coming out to Nassau PTG from Connecticut.
