President's Message
by Paul Eccardt

When I was growing up, starting at about age 11, I loved to work on things. It started with bicycles, then motor bikes and lawnmowers, and later motorcycles and cars. I worked after school and on weekends as a mechanic at the local lawnmower shop. My favorite tool had just been invented; it was the vise grip. The smallest sized one came out a little later. I bought the small sized one and used it for almost everything, I even learned how easy it is to strip a bolt. I lost them a few times and found them months later; once they had gotten run over by a truck. I still have those slightly bent vise grips, and two new pairs that I keep in my tuning case. They have many uses and no tool box should be without them. Here are just a few; twisting bass strings, taking off tight upright action bolts, tightening key leads on under levers, adjusting pedal rods, clamping small parts, taking out broken bolts, adjusting stripped drop screws, and they can also be used to cut piano wire or even small bolts. It is better to use a wrench on a bolt, but in a pinch you can use it. Make sure to put the flat front part on the bolt and tighten enough so it won't slip off. I used this tool all my life and I will continue to use them until they invent something better.

Minutes of the December Meeting
by Marty Dinerstein - Secretary

Our final meeting of 2002 was a party at a restaurant in Herricks, NY, the Cafe Sport. The food was excellent, the conversation great, and the people who attended all had a great time. We thank Mike Slavin and the committee for arranging this for the chapter.
